SAUSAGES WITH ONION GRAVY

Sausages have always been one of Mum’s favourite things and onion gravy makes them so much better.  At age 98 she still loves them. I don’t think she ever used a  recipe, but this one comes pretty close to how she made them, although I’m pretty sure she cooked the sausages in dripping not butter.

CHICKEN MARSALA

These no real need to put the ingredients in an Oven Bag to cook this dish, you can easily put it all in a casserole dish.  Although an Oven Bag does save on the washing up…………

Ingredients: ½ oz flour = 15g, 1oz butter = 30g, 4-6oz sultanas = 125-185g, ½ pint = 300ml wine/stock & marsala/sweet sherry

CHERRY RIPE SLICE (NO BAKE)

This is another no bake slice from the Keysborough Bowls Social Club Simple Slice Recipes cookbook.  Cochineal is just red food colouring and a few drops will give this slice a nice cherry pink colour, just like a Cherry Ripe bar.

LEMON BISCUIT SLICE – NO BAKE

This recipe pops up a couple of times in Mum’s collection.  The first one is pre-metrics so it dates from at least the 1970s.  This version has been converted which makes it a bit easier for us now.  It’s a pretty simple no bake slice, but it does taste lovely and lemony.

MEATLOAF IN A BASIN

Most meatloaves I know of are baked in a tin or hand molded into a loaf shape.  This is the first time I’ve seen a recipe that steams the loaf in a basin, but trust Mum to have cut out and kept something different.  The combination of potato, carrot and onions together with sausage meat and some spices in this recipe should make for a tasty loaf.

LEMONADE SCONES

I’m afraid the scone making gene skipped a generation with me.  Mum and my daughter both make terrific scones, mine could be used as paving stones.  This certainly seems an unusual recipe, substituting cream for the butter and lemonade for the milk which you would traditionally use.  I’ve no idea if it works, but as it was published in the cooking section of The Sun I have to assume it does.  Worth trying???

WANGNOO SLICE (NO BAKE)

This little recipe book compiled by the Keysborough Bowls Social Club is overflowing with great slice ideas so I’ve decided to try to post a recipe each week.

I’ve made this slice many times myself, but I have it in my collection as Wanganui Slice. I’ve always thought that it was named after the New Zealand town of Whanganui.  Whatever the name, it tastes good, although it is rather on the sweet side.
