Among Mum’s recipe collection I’ve found a great sheet put out by the Pampas pastry people. It has lots of Finger Food Recipes so I thought with Christmas entertaining fast approaching I’d share some of them with you. Pinwheels can be made with a variety of fillings, but I think this pizza one will appeal to kids of all ages.
I’ve just found this wonderful leaflet entitled “Fillings for Take-Home Pastry Shells” 8 Tested Recipes from Betty King. I think it’s probably from the the late 1950s, it’s definitely from before metrics started in 1966. On checking I’ve found out that unlike Margaret Fulton, the 1970s cooking queen, Betty King did not exist. She was just an entity created as a marketing tool….an attempt to fool all of the people all of the time….so nothing’s changed there. But tastes have changed since then so I’m not sure you’d want to actually make any of the fillings.
It’s really easy to grab a packet of chips and a tub of dip to have when friends come over, but if you’ve got the time to make them these homemade cheese biscuits are terrific. They don’t take that long to do and they go really well with a drink.
You can make these to go with pre-dinner drinks, for a picnic, for a party or as a supper dish. They’re great hot or cold and that makes them very versatile.
My and Dad played cards regularly with Mena and her husband Les. Supper was always served at the end of the night and I think this simple snack was a one of their favourites.
SAVOURY SPREAD
Mix all together, spread on bread and bake until brown.
I know the Christmas/New Year entertaining season is over now, but I think these little snacks might come in handy when you get the drinks out next. I like the fact that you can make them, freeze the mixture and then bake when needed.
While blue cheese isn’t to everyone’s taste, when you combine it with puff pastry the resulting snack does go very well with pre dinner drinks or as a party nibble.
Long before packets of cheese twists appeared on our supermarket shelves this recipe was printed in the New Idea. Making them might take a bit more effort than just putting the packet in your trolley, but they have a stronger cheese flavor and because you make more they work out a lot cheaper.
I think this is one of the most versatile of the meatball recipes that Mum collected. You can make them as a savory to have with drinks or serve them as a main dish with either rice or pasta. The recipe even has instructions for freezing and reheating – what more you possibly want.
This recipe comes from a recipe sheet put out by Continental Kitchen the makers of packet soup mixes. The sheet also has lots of dip recipes using French Onion Soup, Cream of Mushroom soup and Cream of Chicken Soup – all very 1980s. This recipe with camembert cheese spread onto a bread stick and then baked was quite popular as a pre-dinner or party nibble.
