NO BAKE PARTY CAKE

I found this unusual birthday cake recipe among Mum’s Herald Sun cutouts.  She must have been quite taken with it as she cut out around the picture, although I’m sure she never made it.  I really wish it was printed in colour as it must look quite good with the red, yellow and green jelly cubes inside.  Not quite sure what it would taste like though, but if you’re looking for a kids cake you don’t have to spend hours decorating this might work for you….

LEMON TART

I’ll admit that sometimes when I don’t have a lot of time to spare I buy a lemon tart from my local cake shop, but this old recipe of Mum’s reminds me that making your own isn’t all that hard.  The advantage of making it yourself is that you can give it a bit more lemon flavour, bought ones are usually a bit sweeter and don’t have that real lemon kick.

EASY PLUM TART

While making a pie or tart from scratch using your own home made pastry is great sometimes it’s just a lot easier and quicker to use bought pastry.  This plum tart recipe uses sheets of puff pastry which are blind baked before the filling is added.  Blind baking isn’t particularly hard to do, but some people find it a bit daunting. Although Mum must have blind baked quite a lot of pies in her day I like that she took the trouble with this recipe to still set out  the steps needed.

GRASSHOPPER PIE

This is the twin of Brandy Alexander Pie both very much desserts of the 70s.  They have basically the same ingredients, but this one has creme de menthe instead of brandy.  Mum cut both recipes out, probably because I’d told her about making them for dinner parties for our friends.  I haven’t heard of anyone making them for a long, long time now though………………..

BRANDY ALEXANDER PIE

This is very much a dessert from the 70s.  Brandy Alexander Pie together with its twin  Grasshopper Pie were all the fashion back then.  They are basically the same recipe but this one has brandy and creme de cacao and the other has creme de menthe and creme de cacao.  I liked this one, but I think you can see why they both went out of favor.
