There’s really nothing different about this recipe. I think French Toast’s been made this way around the world for a long time. Must admit that the heading Tempting Tucker, followed by French Toast was what appealed to me about this cutting – so Australian ……………
The name Strawberry Matches brings to mind flaky pastry, strawberry jam, cream and pink icing to me. Mum used to make the pastry herself, put the jam inside with the cream and topped the whole lot with pink icing – they were Yummy. Sadly this isn’t Mum’s original recipe, but they are much quicker to make and probably taste almost as good.
Tomato sauce and cheese on toast has been a well loved favourite in Mum’s and my households for years. Mum also used to make a little afternoon tea/supper snack that was cheese and bacon on toast, but this recipe combines them both. Personally I’m not sure about the garlic, but after finding this recipe I’m now going to give the sauce, cheese and bacon a go.
Vegetarian recipes weren’t something Mum would have been looking for on the pages of the Herald Sun. Growing up I can’t remember anyone among our family or friends who didn’t eat meat, so cooking vegetable only dishes just wasn’t necessary. This recipe is on a page Mum kept from the paper that had pork, lamb, sausage and fish casseroles on it, so the recipes were around, they just weren’t something Mum made.
I have no idea who Adam is, so I thought I’d rename this recipe Meringue Topped Apple Custard. What I like about it is, that as with a lot of the old recipes, there’s no fancy ingredients, just things you have in the cupboard. In this case, milk, bread, butter, apples, vanilla essence, eggs and sugar so that makes it a great ‘last minute’ dessert.
I found this recipe among the collection and think it’s a great way to use up the egg yolks leftover from pavlova making. I usually end up making a very, very yellow omelet, but I like this idea better.
I guess you could rename these Coconut Macaroons, maybe not quite the traditional ones that you make with condensed milk, but still a quick and a gluten free treat for everyone.
This starts off as a classic Scotch Egg recipe – hard boiled eggs, covered in sausage mince, rolled in breadcrumbs and fried. That’s the way I’ve always made them mostly to take on picnics. The twist here is that you put them in a tomato sauce and bake them. Certainly different – maybe worth a try!
Little tarts like these always remind me of the afternoon tea parties Mum used to have with her friends. I’m not sure she made these particular tarts, but the sight of the pastry, filling and cream somehow brings back memories of getting home from school and being allowed to eat the leftovers…………..ahhhhhhhhhhh………..delicious memories.
I always think of pinwheels being savoury not fruity and sweet, but this recipe is a great idea. With the apple in them they might go a bit soggy if you leave them in the tin too long, but I hopefully they’d be eaten before that could happen.
