This is an old recipe of Mum’s that I’ve been making for years. I originally made it as a spread for toast, but it’s just as good on biscuits with drinks. It used to be a pain to make as you had to put it a mincer, which was messy and took ages, but now you just throw it in the blender. You can make it as chunky or fine as you like, my sister-in-law loves it and I try to remember to make it when she’s coming to stay.
MUM’S PICNIC SLICE
Our family had a great picnic in the park last Sunday and my lovely 7 year old granddaughter and I made a Savoury Luncheon Slice* to share. On the same page as that recipe is this other slice of Mum’s which is also an old family favourite. The two us will have to make it for the next picnic.

CREAMY BAKED BRUSSELS SPROUTS
Are you looking for a more interesting way to serve brussels sprouts? My childhood memory of this poor vegetable was a greenish/yellowish soggy mess on the plate – my husband still won’t eat them because his lovely Mum cooked them in the pressure cooker!!!! Of course, there’s no need to boil the life out of them, you can steam them, fry them, bbq them and even bake them in cream with parmesan cheese and walnuts as this recipe suggests.
BANANA PLUM PUDDING
Sadly, Christmas decorations are already appearing in the shopping centres even though it’s still October. So I suppose it’s nearly time to start working out what Christmas cake and what style of pudding to make this year. I seem to make a different version every year. I’m not quite sure if this recipe qualifies as a Christmas pudding, but if you’re looking for something different it might be worth trying.
CURRY MINCE PUFFS
BANANA, HONEY AND RICOTTA FRENCH TOAST
PICKLED BEETROOT
CHICKEN COOKED IN CIDER
A couple of years ago my youngest son had a great holiday in Tasmania and came back with several bottles of a new cider he’d discovered – Pagan Cider. Since then we always have a few bottles in the fridge, one of which I’m now going to use to try this chicken recipe – guess I’d better make it when he’s coming for dinner.
INDONESIAN SPAGHETTI
FETE TREATS – Rocky Road, Creamy Fudge, Toasted Marshmallows, Coconut Ice, Toffee, Peanut Brittle, Butterscotch Popcorn, Honeycomb, Chocolate-Cherry Coconut Roughs
When my kids were growing up providing something for them to take to be sold at their school fetes was a major headache. I’m not sure if it’s the same sort of problem these days, but I thought this compile of Fete Treats might be worth posting just in case it is. It’s from a Herald Sun feature in August 1994 and has all the major fete treats of the day printed in one place which I thought was a great idea.
