This is another version of a Frozen Christmas Pudding. With this one you add the melted chocolate to the mix instead of coating the pudding with chocolate and so end up with chocolate ice cream. That sounds good as does the idea of serving it in brandy baskets.

FLORENTINE SLICE
CHOCOLATE SLICE
Slices that used condensed milk and copha were very popular in the ’70s and ’80s. In our family there were quite a few recipes that were shared between Mum, my aunties and even by then my sisters-in-law. Instead of icing the slice this one uses a bar of milk chocolate as the topping. The copha is added in to prevent the chocolate cracking when you cut it.
APRICOT ROUGH SLICE
MAYONNAISE
Salad dressings these days are many and varied. You can make them yourself or buy them in the supermarket, but in the 1950s you had no choice but to make it yourself. Mum always had a bottle of homemade mayonnaise in the fridge. Today this recipe seems a bit mundane, especially with the condensed milk, but it’s part of my family history and I’m guessing lots of others as well.
CARAMEL FUDGE FINGERS
The old no bake slices were a quick and easy way to make something sweet for the family or visitors, especially in summer when you didn’t want to heat up the kitchen by using the oven. This one uses condensed milk and Marie biscuits and has flaked almonds on the top. If the almonds are a problem for you I’m sure you could use dried fruits or even choc chips instead.
PECAN CHOC-CHIP SLICE
Using condensed milk to make slices was a lot more common back 1980s than it is today, but it certainly makes a nice slice. The first time I cooked with pecans was around that time as well. I made an ‘exotic’ American Pecan Pie, using pecans and the hard to obtain ingredient, corn syrup. I think this slice recipe probably dates from a little later than that, especially as it comes from an ad for Riverside an Australian company which urges readers to join the All Australian Pecan Club.
